DAY 1: Friday, October 7, 2022 DEPARTURE: OVERNIGHT FLIGHT TO STRASBOURG
Departure from the US for overnight flight to Strasbourg on Friday, June 3, 2022. Or take the TGV Train from CDG to Strasbourg upon arrival in Paris. Departing Strasbourg on June 13, either by TGV to Charles de Gaulle or by air. Note that if you plan on staying in Paris before or after the trip, it is easier to reach Strasbourg with the TGV, high speed train. The ride is more or less 2 hours.
Air and train fares are not included but Celestial Voyagers can help you get the best fare and schedule.
DAY 2: Saturday, October 8, 2022 WELCOME TO DELIGHTFUL ALSACE! | Meals: D | Hotel Les Haras 4*, Strasbourg
Arrival in Strasbourg either by air or with TGV train from Charles de Gaulle Airport, Roissy
Group transfer to HOTEL “LES HARAS” for those traveling as a group and check-in for 3 nights. Welcome dinner at Restaurant “WINSTUB”, a typical Alsatian restaurant.
DAY 3: Sunday, October 9, 2022 EXPLORE STRASBOURG | Meals: B D | Hotel Les Haras 4*, Strasbourg
Morning gourmet walking tour with tasting of Kouglof and gingerbread. Visit city highlights: the Old town, the cathedral and the Petite France district. Afternoon free time and then 4:00 PM : Cooking class with English speaking chef to prepare a 3 course Alsatian meal with wine included.
DAY 4: Monday, October 24, 2022 | EXPLORE ROMAN PROVENCE | Meals: B L | Hotel Mercure Pont d'Avignon 4*
In Gundershoffen, visit a pretzel factory followed by a visit of “raifort (horseradish) and mustard factory in nearby Mietesheim.
Lunch in a typical village winstub.
Proceed to Saverne to visit a brewery and taste some Alsatian beer.
Return to Strasbourg for an evening at leisure.
DAY 5: Tuesday, October 11, 2022 THE WINE ROUTE & VINEYARD PICNIC | Meals: B L | Grand Hotel & Spa 4*, Gerardmer
We depart for Obernai along the famous and scenic Wine Route. There we’ll stop at a winery where we’ll have a tasting followed by a delightful picnic lunch in the vineyard. After lunch, we proceed to Ribeauville where we’ll enjoy a chocolate experience at the “Chocolaterie” of master chocolatier Daniel Stoffel en route to our destination of Gerardmer in the Vosges Mountains.
We check in for three nights at the Grand Hotel & Spa de Gerardmer. Located in the heart of the Regional Natural Park of Ballons des Vosges, this historic hotel offers elegance and tradition with three restaurants to choose from for dinner on your own. Swim in one of its two indoor and one outdoor swimming pools or treat yourself to skilled self-care at the full-service spa located in five cabins.
DAY 6: Wednesday, October 12, 2022 WILD PLANTS IN THE VOSGES MOUNTAINS | Meals: B L | Grand Hotel & Spa 4*, Gerardmer
Today, we’ll have the unique opportunity to learn to recognize edible wild plants and berries that grow in the forest of the Vosges Mountains accompanied by an expert guide. After collecting your plants, the group will cook lunch together preparing dishes incorporating these highly nutritious wild-foraged foods.
Return to your hotel-spa in the afternoon and book spa services if you'd like (not included). Relax and then stop into its legendary bar with a hearth fireplace and cozy atmosphere that is not to be missed.
DAY 7: Thursday, October 13, 2022 SELESTAT & HAUT KOENINGSBOURG CASTLE | Meals: B D | Grand Hotel & Spa 4*, Gerardmer
We depart for an excursion to Sélestat on the Wine Road where we’ll have free time for lunch and a stroll to explore this charming and historic town founded in the eighth century as a port on the Ill River and which has two imposing medieval churches. Sélestat experienced a long period of prosperity from the wine trade and became a cultural center with its renowned Humanist Library.
In the afternoon, we visit nearby Orschwiller and have a guided tour of the famed Haut-Kœnigsbourg Castle.
We return to our spa-hotel for dinner on at the hotel with the group.
DAY 8: Friday, October 14, 2022 MUENSTER CHEESE & COLMAR | Meals: B L | Hotel Turenne 3*, Colmar
Departure for Munster where we’ll visit a farm producing authentic Munster cheese, a strong-smelling soft cheese with a subtle taste produced from milk produced in the Vosges Mountains. Its name comes from the town of Munster, where the cheese was stored and aged in the cellars of nearby monasteries and abbeys.
We’ll enjoy a typical Marcaire lunch, a farm-style meal that originated with cow herds of the Vosges.
After lunch, we continue to the canal-filled town of Colmar where we’ll have a guided city tour, including the famed Unterlinden Museum, located in a thirteenth-century convent now linked to several other buildings. Its most famous object is the celebrated sixteenth-century Altarpiece of Issenheim. Visitors can walk around the cloister garden, the museum orchard, and stop for refreshments at the Café.
We will also see Little Venice, a charming area along the river originally inhabited by a rural community of wine-producers, market gardeners and boatmen.
In the afternoon, we check-in to our hotel of character centrally located for three nights and have dinner on our own.
DAY 9: Saturday, October 15, 2022 A BOAT RIDE & ALSATIAN COOKING CLASS | Meals: B D | Hotel Turenne 3*, Colmar
In the morning. enjoy a peaceful half-hour boat ride on the river and some free time with a snack on your own to stave off hunger pangs until your afternoon cooking class at a local cooking school in Colmar. There, you’ll learn the secrets of Alsatian cooking working with a local chef and fresh local market products. Dinner will consist of the dishes you have prepared paired with a selection of local wines.
After dinner, we return to our hotel in Colmar for the night.
DAY 10: Sunday, October 16, 2022 ALSATIAN VILLAGES & L’AUBERGE DE L’ILLE | Meals: B L | Hotel Turenne 3*, Colmar
For our last day in Alsace, we follow the Wine Road and visit the charming country Alsatian villages of Riquewihr and Kaysersberg.
We’ll mark the end of our tour with a memorable Gala Farewell Lunch at the mythical “Auberge de l’Ill,” the three-star Michelin restaurant run by Chef Marc Haeberlin located on the banks of the river.
We return to our hotel in Colmar for our last night in Alsace with time to walk around, do some shopping and perhaps get a glass of wine or beer and a snack.
DAY 11: Monday, October 17, 2022 SAY FAREWELL TO BEAUTIFUL ALSACE | Meals: B
After breakfast, transfer to Strasbourg Station to travel by TGV fast train to Charles de Gaulle Airport (ticket not included) or Strasbourg Airport for flights home (or extend your stay in Alsace--we can help).
