Aliza’s “Outstanding in Her Field” Award from Les Dames d’Escoffier

I am a proud charter member of the Philadelphia Chapter of the prestigious international organization of women of accomplishment in food, fine beverage and hospitality, Les Dames d’Escoffier, and former chapter president. I was thrilled to be selected as one of the recipients of the Chapter’s 2018 Outstanding in Her Field Award. As a pioneering woman chef in the city (my first chef job was in 1976 at the much-beloved Under the Blue Moon Restaurant in Chestnut Hill), I know just how difficult it is for a woman to be accepted in the kitchen; to be accorded the respect due to the position, and the personal sacrifices required to advance in the field. 

While women in the kitchen have made much progress during these years, we still have a very long way to go including dealing with rampant sexual harassment, significantly lower earnings, and the fact that too many men find it difficult to take direction from a female head chef. Organizations like LDEI help us by giving us a forum to interact with others in our field and learn their strategies, and for us to understand that we are not alone in our struggles.
